Within the grand narrative of history, the boundless vitality of women has always been concealed. As the historian Gerda Lerner observed, “The most striking thing about the history of women is the general historian’s neglect of women” (Lerner, 1979). In the cultural spaces of contemporary exhibitions, the stories of women have been repeatedly overlooked. They are the muted flames flickering in the crevices of history. To break free from this silence, the material artefacts and art exhibitions that give voice to women’s lives and imaginations will become essential cornerstones for claiming a woman’s voice within the public sphere. The presentation of cultures is never a simple matter of inclusion — it is more akin to the folded coexistence of village and city. What I seek is for the awakening of female identity and the sense of self within the field of ethnic culture to illuminate one another, each a mirror and a light to the other.
