Grandmother, the mountain was your whole life.

When I was small, you would always tell me how splendid the world beyond the mountains was — and yet you bound your entire life to the folds of these hills.

Later, I walked out of the mountains. I met many grandmothers. Yet in my mind’s eye, I would always see you — adding firewood by the hearth, labouring along the ridges of the fields.

I brought your photographs to Italy. A faraway land your feet never touched — yet a place where the echo of your life’s story now resounds.

Grandmother, your world was the mountain. My world is you.
